Welcome to the official website
for the bands of
Providence High School
in Charlotte, NC.
In Memory of Paul Jackson
Rest in Peace, Mr. Jackson
Paul R. Jackson, Jr
1971-2012
Paul Jackson, our beloved band director, passed away on February
9, 2012.
His musical experience began by learning to play piano and trombone while a student at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, SC.
He marched three seasons (1989, 1990, and 1992) with The Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in Bergenfield, NJ.
In 1990 The Cadets were The World Champions. While marching The Cadets he developed a strong desire to follow in the footsteps of drill designer, Mark Sylvester.
His drum corps experience also included two years on Carolina Crown’s staff.
Mr. Jackson graduated cum laude
with his Bachelor’s in Music Education from University of
South Carolina in 1994. His passion was teaching, which he
enjoyed for the past seventeen years. He began his teaching
career at Blenheim Elementary/Middle School in Marlboro
County, SC.
Next, he was Associate Director of Bands at
Scotland High School. While at Scotland he started designing
marching band drill. He also had the pleasure of guest
conducting the Scotland HS Symphonic Band during their
performance at The 1997 NCMEA In-Service Convention.
Mr. Jackson was also Director of Bands at Forest Hills
High School and East Union Middle School in Marshville, NC.
The bands at both of these schools received numerous
Superiors and/or First Place Awards during his tenure. He
continued to write marching band drill for Forest Hills as
well as at least one other marching band each summer.
While at Providence High School Mr. Jackson has continued
their tradition of outstanding concert band performances.
Under his leadership The PHS Wind Ensemble and Concert Band
have received Superior Ratings at The SCDBA Concert
Festival. The PHS Marching Band has received Superior
Ratings, First Place in Class Awards, and Grand
Championships, including Grand Champion at Band Beat the
past 3 years. Mr. Jackson has been involved in the PHS
winter programs including Jazz Band, Winterguard, Winter
Percussion, and The PHS Musical. Recently he was also voted
to receive the SCDBA Award of Excellence. He had the honor
of conducting the North Carolina South Central All District
Band in January, 2012.
Mr. Jackson lived in Matthews,
NC. His hobbies included practicing yoga at a local studio.
His bravery and strength during his long battle with cancer
has been an inspiration to all who have had the pleaure of
knowing this remarkable man.
